ABOUT

About this spot

Nijo Castle is indispensable to the history of Kyoto. As the place where the Tokugawa shogunate began and ended, it was a stage on which Japanese history moved greatly. The biggest highlight is the "Ninomaru Palace," designated a National Treasure. You can experience the finest architectural techniques and art of the time, including gorgeous wall paintings and carvings and the "nightingale floors" that chirp like birds when walked upon. The Ohiroma, where Tokugawa Yoshinobu announced the return of political power to the emperor, has a solemn atmosphere that overwhelms even those who are not history fans. The spacious grounds hold three beautiful gardens, including the "Ninomaru Garden," a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, which show a different face in every season. In spring, over 300 cherry trees of about 50 varieties bloom, and the nighttime illumination events are also popular. Whether for a solo trip reflecting on history or a classic Kyoto outing with friends and family, this is a place for a rich and memorable time.
