ABOUT
About this spot
With a history of over 400 years, Nishiki Market sits in the heart of Kyoto and has long been loved by locals and professional chefs as 'Kyoto's Kitchen.' More than 120 shops line the narrow street, about 390 meters long, packed with traditional ingredients such as fresh Kyoto vegetables, seasonal seafood, tofu, pickles and dried goods. Recently it has become a standard Kyoto sightseeing spot, bustling with visitors from Japan and abroad. Being able to enjoy distinctly Kyoto food on the spot, such as dashimaki tamago (rolled omelet), tempura and Japanese sweets, is another big attraction. Just walking while listening to the lively calls of the shopkeepers gives you the excitement unique to a market. An arcade covers the street, so you can shop and stroll regardless of the weather. It suits any style, whether a food crawl with friends, hunting for gifts for loved ones, or a leisurely walk alone to feel everyday Kyoto life. It is a vibrant spot (* please observe good manners when eating and drinking, and enjoy your food in the places designated by each shop).
