ABOUT
About this spot
Kiyomizu-dera, a byword for Kyoto sightseeing, is a historic temple standing on the mid-slope of Mt. Otowa. The top highlight is the "Kiyomizu Stage," constructed without a single nail. From here you can see the whole of Kyoto, and you can experience overwhelming beauty whenever you visit, with spring cherry blossoms, deep summer greenery, autumn foliage, and winter snow. The approach streets of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka are lined with atmospheric shops, and strolling is part of the fun. Within the grounds, the "Otowa Waterfall," where three streams flow said to bring benefits for studies, love, and longevity, is a power spot visited by many worshippers. The nearby Jishu Shrine, famous for matchmaking, is also next door. Whether a photogenic trip with friends, a quiet solo historical exploration, or making family memories, it is a spot whose charm can be felt by a wide range of generations. During special night openings, the temple is also illuminated, offering a fantastical sight.
