ABOUT

About this spot

Kyoto City Zoo is a historic spot that opened in 1903 (Meiji 36) as Japan's second zoo. Located in the cultural Okazaki area, where Heian Jingu Shrine and art museums gather, it completed a full renewal in 2015. With the concept of 'a zoo that is close, fun and educational,' it was reborn as a facility where you are closer to the animals and can observe them in lively form. The zoo is clearly divided by theme, such as 'Elephant Forest' and 'Fierce Animal World,' and its exhibits are powerful, including a walkway from which you can look down on giraffes and a pool where you can watch elephants bathe. There is also an area recreating the 'Forest of Kyoto,' and a library cafe for learning more about animals and a restaurant, so adults can spend relaxed time too. Its biggest feature is that you can meet animals while enjoying Kyoto's atmosphere, with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall. With a compact site that is easy to walk around, it is a heartwarming zoo ideal for families, and also for adult dates and solo strolls.
