ABOUT

About this spot

Located in Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture, Kannonji Castle is a mountain castle ruin of outstanding scale, known as the seat of the Rokkaku clan who ruled Omi in the Warring States period. Built across Mt. Kinugasa (432 m), the castle is famous for its extensive use of full-scale stone walls even before Oda Nobunaga's Azuchi Castle, giving it great value in castle history. Now counted among the "Top 100 Castles of Japan," stone walls and enclosure (kuruwa) remains from that era are scattered throughout the mountain, letting you feel the breath of history up close. It is also popular as a hiking course, and strolling along the lush mountain paths is ideal for working off a lack of exercise and refreshing yourself. From lookout spots near the summit and along the way, you can enjoy spectacular views over the vast Lake Biwa and the town of Azuchi. By visiting the nearby ancient temples such as Kannon-shoji and Kuwanomi-dera, you can savor Omi's history and culture more deeply. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and set out on a weekend adventure in search of the romance of the Warring States period.
