ABOUT
About this spot
Azuchi Castle was built by Oda Nobunaga as his base for unifying the country. It once boasted a gorgeous five-story, seven-level keep, but it was burned down after the Honnoji Incident, and today only the stone walls and foundation stones remain. The highlight is the "Otemichi" path leading from the main gate. A straight stone staircase about 6 meters wide continues for over 180 meters, and its overwhelming scale, symbolizing the authority of the time, is awe-inspiring. From the keep site at the summit, you can take in Lake Biwa and the peaceful surrounding scenery that Nobunaga himself must have gazed upon, a view that cleanses the heart even of those who are not history fans. Walking the entire route takes about an hour, and strolling along the well-maintained paths while reflecting on a turning point in history is a special experience. By visiting the nearby "Azuchi Castle Archives" and "Nobunaga no Yakata" as well, you can picture the castle in its heyday more vividly. It is ideal for a weekend historical stroll or a solo refresh.
