ABOUT

About this spot

Ishiyama-dera Temple in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, has been a sacred site since the Nara period and is Temple No. 13 on the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. The vast grounds expose the giant wollastonite rock (a natural monument) that gave the temple its name, and the main hall built atop it is designated a National Treasure as the oldest wooden building in Shiga Prefecture. The legend that Murasaki Shikibu, the Heian-period female writer, conceived The Tale of Genji here while gazing at the full moon of the fifteenth night is famous, and the "Genji no Ma" room where she is said to have begun writing remains today. It is a must for fans of Heian literature and a delight for history lovers. Known as the "Temple of Flowers," it lets you enjoy beautiful natural scenery all year round, with cherry blossoms in spring, azaleas and fresh green maples in early summer, vivid autumn leaves in autumn, and plum blossoms in winter. It is highly recommended for a quiet weekend solo trip, a historical stroll with family, or a atmospheric date. Why not spend a peaceful moment with the murmur of the Seta River?
