ABOUT
About this spot
Omi Jingu Shrine in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, enshrines Emperor Tenji, who built the Otsu Capital. Within the grounds surrounded by rich forest, a vivid vermilion tower gate stands, and its dignified appearance purifies the hearts of visitors. Because Emperor Tenji is said to have installed Japan's first water clock (rokoku), he is revered as the "god of time." The grounds contain a sundial and a model of the water clock, and there is also a clock museum displaying rare Japanese clocks and more. As the first poem of the Hyakunin Isshu was composed by Emperor Tenji, the shrine is also very famous as the holy land (hall of fame) of competitive karuta. The Omi Kangakukan, where the "Karuta Meijin and Queen title matches" are held every New Year, is here, and as the setting of the manga and film "Chihayafuru," many fans, especially young people, make pilgrimages here. With beauty in every season, from spring cherry blossoms to fresh greenery and autumn leaves, it is one of Shiga's leading power spots, where history lovers, anime fans, and families alike can spend a relaxed time.
