ABOUT

About this spot

Hikone Castle, a leading tourist spot in Shiga Prefecture, is one of only five castles in Japan whose keeps are designated National Treasures. It strongly retains its appearance from when it was completed in the early Edo period, letting you feel the breath of history up close. The highlights are, above all, its intricate and beautiful roof forms and the superb view from the keep that awaits at the top of steep staircases. Below spreads the castle town, and in the distance you can enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake. The spacious grounds also include "Genkyu-en," a Place of Scenic Beauty, and a stroll through the elegant garden with the castle as a backdrop is not to be missed. About 1,100 cherry trees bloom in spring, followed by autumn leaves in fall and snowscapes in winter, giving the castle a rich expression throughout the year. In addition, the performances of the popular character "Hikonyan," who appears every day, are another big attraction enjoyed by children and adults alike. Whether you want to trace history at a leisurely pace alone, or enjoy spectacular views on a holiday with friends or family, this symbol of Shiga will satisfy any style of travel. We hope you will visit.
