ABOUT
About this spot
Known as Shiga Prefecture's foremost ancient shrine, Taga Taisha has long been affectionately called "Otaga-san." The main deities are Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto, the parent gods of Amaterasu Omikami. Their names appear in Japan's oldest book, the Kojiki, and many worshippers come from all over the country to pray to these deities of longevity, good matches, and warding off misfortune. The vast grounds are full of historic attractions, such as the beautiful Okushoin Garden, designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty, and the Taiko Bridge, said to have been dedicated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in prayer for his mother's recovery from illness. Weeping cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall add color, so you can enjoy the changing seasons. After worship, a classic way to enjoy it is to taste the famous "Itokiri-mochi" at the lively shopping street in front of the shrine. It is recommended for a refreshing weekend with a family drive, goshuin stamp touring with friends, or a quiet solo stroll.
