ABOUT

About this spot

Kyushu National Museum sits on a green hill right next to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and is the fourth national museum in Japan after Tokyo, Nara and Kyoto. Under its unique theme of "understanding the formation of Japanese culture from an Asian historical perspective," it introduces the history of exchange with Asian countries from the Paleolithic era to the early modern period, along with a vast number of National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. The main highlight is the spacious "Cultural Exchange Exhibition Room" on the 4th floor. In an open space, you can view precious exhibits zoned by era at your leisure. The free area on the 1st floor, "Ajippa," is a hands-on exhibit where you can directly touch instruments and costumes from across Asia, very popular with families and school trip students. The building itself is also very beautiful and well worth seeing as architecture, with huge mirror-like outer walls that reflect the surrounding nature and a dynamic wooden ceiling. It can be reached from Dazaifu Tenmangu via the "Rainbow Tunnel," enveloped in dreamlike light, and is recommended as a stop during a stroll. It is a palace of culture Kyushu can be proud of, perfect for an intellectual date on a weekend or for delving into history on your own.
