ABOUT
About this spot
Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art is a prefectural museum in the Tenjin district of Fukuoka City. It sits just north of the downtown shopping area, next to Susaki Park, and is easy to include in a day of walking around Tenjin and Hakata. Its predecessor was the Fukuoka Prefectural Cultural Hall, which opened on November 3, 1964 with a library and an art museum under one roof. In 1983 the prefectural library moved out and the building was fully renovated, and it became Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art on November 3, 1985. The building was designed by Takeo Sato. The collection centers on artists connected with Fukuoka, including Aoki Shigeru, Sakamoto Hanjiro, Takashima Yajuro and Kawabe Mitate. It also holds paintings by the Ogata family, official painters to the Fukuoka domain, as well as Kurume kasuri textiles and old ceramics from Kyushu. Alongside the collection shows, special exhibitions on Japanese and international artists are held, and the mood of the galleries changes with each one. Exhibitions are open 10:00-18:00 (last entry 17:30). The museum is closed on Mondays and at the year end and New Year, and may close or open on other days at short notice. Special exhibition fees vary, so please check the official website. A new prefectural museum is planned, so it is also worth checking the website for the latest news. By car, it is about 750 m from the Tenjin-kita exit of the Fukuoka Expressway Loop Line. Allow one to two hours for a single exhibition. Because it is indoors, it also suits hot or rainy days in Tenjin. Kushida Shrine (about 1.2 km), the Nakasu food stalls (about 1.2 km) and Shofuku-ji Temple (about 1.5 km) are nearby.
