ABOUT

About this spot

Located in the heart of Kitakyushu, Kokura Castle is a historic castle built in 1602 by Hosokawa Tadaoki. Its most distinctive feature is the keep, built in a rare style called karazukuri, in which the fifth floor projects out beyond the fourth. The interior of the keep was renewed in 2019 and is now an interactive museum where you can enjoy learning about history. Inside, exhibits for all ages abound, including hands-on corners that let you feel like a feudal lord, an immersive theater, and a giant painting of the famous Okuri-tora and Mukae-tora (the "sending tiger" and "welcoming tiger"). From the top floor of the keep, you can take in a panoramic view of Kokura, where modern high-rises blend with historic stone walls. In spring, the castle is also known as a popular cherry blossom viewing spot, and at night you can enjoy its enchanting illuminated appearance. We recommend combining your visit with a stroll through the neighboring Kokura Castle Garden. Whether you are exploring history on a solo trip or heading out with family and friends, this is one of Kitakyushu's signature attractions.
