ABOUT
About this spot
Ono Castle is one of Japan's oldest ancient mountain fortresses (Korean-style mountain castles), built in 665 during the Asuka period, more than 1,350 years ago, following the defeat at the Battle of Hakusukinoe. Located near the summit of Mt. Shiou, which spans Onojo City, Dazaifu City, and Umi Town in Fukuoka Prefecture, it still preserves vast wall remains with a total length of about 8 km. The site has been developed as a hiking route, where you can see up close the huge stone walls and earthen ramparts that evoke the breath of history, as well as the groups of foundation stones that mark the sites of former storehouses. The lookout near the summit offers a spectacular panorama over the Fukuoka Plain and Hakata Bay, making it ideal for refreshing the spirit. It is popular with a wide range of visitors, from families on a light weekend hike to solo travelers eager to learn history in depth and friends on an active outing. At this place that was once the front line of ancient Japan's national defense, do take a moment to feel the passage of endless time.
