ABOUT
About this spot
Fukuoka Castle is one of the largest castles in Kyushu, built over seven years in the early Edo period by Kuroda Kanbei, a master castle builder, and his son Nagamasa, the first lord of the Fukuoka domain. Today it is beloved as "Maizuru Park," and the magnificent stone walls found throughout and the Tamon Yagura turret, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, convey its former appearance. It is beautiful through the seasons, and in spring especially it is known as one of Fukuoka's finest cherry blossom spots, with enchanting evening illumination as well. Strolling through the grounds, you can see the streets of Fukuoka and Hakata Bay from the site of the keep platform, and even those who are not history fans are sure to be soothed by the sense of openness. On the grounds is the "Fukuoka Castle Mukashi Tanbokan," which has rich exhibits including computer-graphics recreations of how the castle once looked. It is a spot ideal for a quiet historical walk alone as well as for a picnic with family and friends. Do visit this vast historical space that lets you forget the bustle of the city center.
