ABOUT
About this spot
Located in the northern part of Hakata Bay, Shikanoshima is a historic island known as the place where the gold seal inscribed with "Kan no Wa no Na no Kokuo," Japan's oldest national treasure, was discovered. Because it is connected to the mainland, it is a hugely popular destination that is easily reached by car or bicycle. The roughly 11 km road around the island has few traffic lights, and cycling or driving while gazing at the blue waters of the Genkai Sea is wonderfully refreshing. The island is packed with highlights, including Shikaumi Shrine, a power spot dedicated to the guardian deity of the sea, and the Shiomi Park Observation Deck, which overlooks Hakata Bay. The panoramic view from Shiomi Park, where the buildings of downtown Fukuoka and the sea come together, is especially stunning. It is also famous as a sunset spot where you can watch the beautiful sun sink into the horizon at dusk. For lunch, treat yourself to the local specialty sazae-don (turban shell rice bowl) and fresh seafood dishes. Whether you want to relax in nature on a solo trip or enjoy a weekend outing with family or friends, this charming spot lets you forget the hustle and bustle of the city.
