ABOUT
About this spot
Dazaifu Tenmangu, a leading sightseeing spot in Fukuoka, is a sacred site enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and is beloved by many people, especially students preparing for exams. The vast grounds are full of highlights, including the Main Hall, designated an Important Cultural Property (worship in front of the Main Hall resumed in September 2026 after the Reiwa-era major renovation), and the three "Taiko-bashi" arched bridges symbolizing past, present, and future. Its seasonal nature is also a draw. The early spring beauty is exceptional, with about 6,000 plum trees in bloom, including the "Tobiume" (Flying Plum), said to have flown overnight out of devotion to Michizane. Irises in early summer and autumn foliage also offer atmospheric scenery whenever you visit. The pleasure of visiting is not limited to the grounds. Along the approach from the station, shops selling the local specialty "Umegae-mochi" line the way, and strolling while enjoying one fresh off the griddle is pure bliss. Blending a traditional atmosphere with modern cafes, the approach can be enjoyed to the fullest by friends, families, and solo travelers alike, and is an essential landmark of Fukuoka sightseeing.
