ABOUT
About this spot
Nagatoro Gorge is one of Saitama Prefecture's signature scenic spots. The area along the Arakawa River is designated a nationally Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. The main highlight is Nagatoro Iwadatami, a flat rock formation that looks like tatami mats laid out. The dynamic scenery of uplifted crystalline schist stretching about 500 meters is also called a "window to the Earth" and is known as a geologically precious site. The star activity is the Nagatoro Line Kudari, a ride down the river in a traditional Japanese boat. Enjoy the boatman's skillful pole work and lively commentary, the thrill of running the rapids, and the beautiful scenery seen from the calm stretches. Part of its great appeal is its changing look through the seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, dazzling fresh green in summer, vivid autumn colors, and the kotatsu-bune heated boats in winter. With easy access, about 2 hours from central Tokyo, the area around the station is dotted with retro shopping streets, stylish cafes, and famous shaved ice shops. It is perfect for drives with friends, weekend family trips, or when you want to feel nature slowly by yourself.
