ABOUT

About this spot

The Saitama Aquarium in Hanyu Suigo Park is a freshwater-fish-only aquarium, rare even nationwide. Its big feature is that you can observe the creatures living from the source of the Arakawa River through to its lower reaches and the estuary at Tokyo Bay, following the flow of the river. About 70 species of fish are exhibited inside, and the exhibit of the rare "Musashi Tomiyo," a nationally designated Natural Monument, is not to be missed. In the large outdoor pond, giant sturgeons and carp swim, and feeding them is hugely popular with children. In the world tropical fish corner, you can see giant fish such as the arapaima from the Amazon River up close, and the diversity of freshwater fish will surprise you. The aquarium is surrounded by a park rich in nature, ideal for strolling and picnics. It is recommended both for an active weekend with family and for quietly gazing at the tanks alone. There are no flashy dolphin shows, but it is an intellectual sightseeing spot that adults can also enjoy, letting you savor the lives of fish evoking the original landscape of Japan.
