ABOUT
About this spot
Chichibu Shrine, counted among the three great shrines of Chichibu, is an ancient shrine dedicated to Yagokoro Omoikane no Mikoto, known as the god of wisdom. The current main buildings were donated by Tokugawa Ieyasu and are designated as Important Cultural Properties of the prefecture, valuable remains that convey the architectural style of the early Edo period. The highlight is the lavish group of carvings that decorate the shrine buildings. Do not miss the carvings, each rich in meaning, such as the "Tsunagi no Ryu" (Chained Dragon), said to be the work of the master craftsman Hidari Jingoro, the "Tiger of Child-Blessing and Child-Rearing" symbolizing Ieyasu's dignity, and the "Genki Three Wise Monkeys" representing "see well, hear well, speak well." The "Chichibu Night Festival" held every year on December 3 is one of Japan's three great float festivals, and the fireworks lighting up the winter night sky alongside the festival floats are stunningly beautiful. Even on non-festival days, the grounds have a dignified air, making them a perfect place to forget the daily bustle and refresh body and mind. After visiting, enjoy snacking and strolling along the Showa-retro "Baba Street" in front of the shrine gate.
