ABOUT
About this spot
Hachigata Castle Ruins in Yorii Town, Saitama Prefecture, are the remains of a representative castle of the Sengoku period. A natural fortress that cleverly uses the sheer cliffs where the Arakawa and Fukasawa rivers meet, it is known as the base of the Later Hojo clan's rule over northern Kanto. It is now a nationally designated historic site and one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles, a spot where you can feel the weight of history. Within the spacious park, a restored four-legged gate, earthen ramparts, and stone walls are scattered about, letting you see the castle-building techniques of the time up close. The imposing terrain with the river at its back is especially striking. The adjoining Hachigata Castle History Museum teaches the structure and history of the castle in an easy-to-understand way with detailed models and videos, and a visit before your stroll is recommended. The rich seasonal nature is another attraction: in spring the Ujikuni Sakura (Edo Higan cherry), over 150 years old, blooms, and in autumn splendid foliage delights visitors. It is an ideal place to stroll leisurely in a quiet setting, imagining history, as if on a hike. It is a recommended attraction for a wide range, from families to history-loving solo travelers.
