ABOUT
About this spot
Beppu Tower is a 100 m tower in Kitahama, Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. It was completed in May 1957 and was first called the Kanko Center TV Tower; it took its present name in 1961. It was designed by Tachu Naito, known as the Tower Doctor, and is said to be the third tower of its kind built in Japan. Six towers by the same designer are known as the Six Tower Brothers. The tower ran into financial trouble in the 1980s but was saved from demolition when it was bought in 1988. After a major renovation starting in 2022 it reopened in January 2023, and it was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2007. The main attraction is the observation deck 55 m above ground, with the viewing floor on the 16th floor and reception on the 17th. It offers a 360-degree panorama of Beppu Bay and the city. The building also houses a restaurant on the first floor, the Beppu Art Museum on the second floor and a rooftop space deck with barbecue and a sauna on the fifth floor. The tower is open from 9:30 to 21:30, with last entry to the deck at 21:00. Deck admission is 800 yen for adults, 600 yen for junior high and high school students and 400 yen for ages 4 to elementary school. Allow about 30 minutes to an hour on the deck, and check the official site for current fees and hours before you visit. The tower is about a 9-minute walk from JR Beppu Station, and Beppu Onsen and the Umitamago aquarium are nearby.
