ABOUT

About this spot

The Usuki Stone Buddhas in Usuki City, Oita Prefecture, are Japan's largest group of stone Buddhas, with more than 60 cliff-carved Buddhas lined up on tuff rock walls. Most were made between the late Heian and Kamakura periods, and their delicate yet powerful carving overwhelms viewers. In particular, the beauty of the central Dainichi Nyorai statue at the Furuzono Stone Buddhas is said to make it "Japan's finest stone Buddha." A charm of the site is walking the quiet approach surrounded by rich nature and feeling the breath of history. You can view the Buddhas with the seasonal scenery: cherry blossoms in spring, lotus flowers in summer, and autumn foliage in fall. Well-kept walking paths in the surrounding area let everyone from seniors to families stroll leisurely. It is recommended as a power spot for forgetting the bustle of daily life and thinking of eternal time, also for solo trips and girls' trips.
