ABOUT

About this spot

Tucked quietly into the heart of Oita City, Funai Castle (Oita Castle) is a valuable site that lets you feel history from the Sengoku period through the Edo period. Construction began under the first lord, Fukuhara Naotaka, and large-scale renovations were later carried out by Takenaka Shigetoshi. Today it has been developed into a castle ruins park. Alongside surviving structures such as the beautiful white-walled "Shumon Yagura" and "Hitojichi Yagura" turrets, the restored "Corridor Bridge," rare even by national standards, is a major highlight. The castle walls reflected in the moat are especially beautiful, and you can stroll leisurely and forget the bustle of the city. In spring, the park becomes one of the city's leading cherry blossom spots, with Somei Yoshino trees in full bloom drawing many hanami visitors. In the evening it is illuminated, wrapping the grounds in a dreamlike atmosphere. Within walking distance of JR Oita Station, it is easy to reach, and its charm lies in how casually you can drop by, whether for a solo history outing or a weekend stroll with family and friends. Why not spend a relaxing time here, feeling the history of Oita on your skin?
