ABOUT
About this spot
Oka Castle (Oka Castle Ruins) in Taketa City, Oita Prefecture, was once an impregnable mountain fortress built on sheer cliffs at an elevation of 325 meters. No buildings remain today, but the magnificent stone walls spreading in every direction strongly preserve the atmosphere of the past, and the site is counted among Japan's 100 Famous Castles. The highlight of a visit is, above all, the beauty of the stone walls. The sculptural craftsmanship of the masonry laid along the steep cliffs is overwhelming, and the site is popular with history lovers and photography enthusiasts alike. It is also famous as the place where composer Rentaro Taki drew inspiration for his masterpiece "Kojo no Tsuki" (The Moon over the Ruined Castle), and a statue of him stands in the grounds. In spring, hundreds of cherry trees bloom, earning the site a place among Japan's 100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots, and in autumn vivid foliage colors the stone walls, so the castle charms visitors with a different face in every season. The view from the ruins is superb as well, and the panorama of the Kuju mountains and Mt. Aso is not to be missed. It is a historic spot ideal for a gentle stroll, whether with family and friends or as a quiet solo trip.
