ABOUT

About this spot

The highlight of Beppu sightseeing is, without question, the "Hell Tour." Among them, the most popular and also registered as a Nationally Designated Place of Scenic Beauty is "Umi Jigoku" (Sea Hell). At first glance it looks like a cool, beautiful cobalt-blue pond like a tropical sea, but it is actually a hot spring as hot as 98 degrees Celsius. The contrast between the rising white steam and the blue water is very fantastical, and wherever you point your camera you are sure to get a photogenic shot. The grounds are like a well-kept garden, and tropical water lilies grown using hot spring heat are another highlight. From May to November, colorful blooms decorate the water's surface. There is also a free-flowing "foot bath" corner, so you can relax and refresh between strolls. Don't miss the local food as well, such as "hot spring eggs" boiled in the hot spring heat and "hell-steamed baked pudding" steamed in hell steam. A symbolic spot of Beppu enjoyed by all generations, from friends traveling together to families.
