ABOUT

About this spot

Known as Japan's oldest natural hell, "Chinoike Jigoku" (Blood Pond Hell) is a leading Beppu attraction, where, as the name says, a striking sight unfolds of the whole pond dyed bright red. The source of this vivid color is red mud containing iron oxide and magnesium oxide, formed naturally under high temperature and pressure underground. It has existed for over 1,300 years and is a place so steeped in history that it is even mentioned in the "Bungo no Kuni Fudoki." The contrast between the billowing steam, the green of the surrounding trees and the vivid red of the pond makes for a scenic view that is sure to look great in photos. In the park there is a shop selling "Chinoike Ointment," made from this red mud, a classic souvenir that has long been prized as a remedy for skin ailments. The grounds also have a free-flowing "foot bath" with natural hot spring water. You can soak your feet in the red water while gazing at the hell scenery at your leisure. With a spacious souvenir corner and restaurant also on site, you can be comfortable on a family trip, a drive with friends or a solo trip. Please visit this spot, where you can feel the pulse of the earth and which stands out even among the Beppu Hells.
