ABOUT
About this spot
One of the Beppu Hells, "Shiraike Jigoku" has as its greatest appeal a mysterious sight: hot water that is colorless and transparent when it gushes out naturally turns a bluish white as the temperature and pressure drop once it falls into the pond. Also chosen as a Nationally Designated Place of Scenic Beauty, the surroundings are maintained as a quiet Japanese garden where you can stroll and enjoy its expressions through the seasons. A unique feature of Shiraike Jigoku is the "Tropical Fish House" using hot spring heat. You can observe rare Amazonian tropical fish up close, such as the arapaima, the world's largest freshwater fish, and piranhas with their sharp teeth, an experience much like a small aquarium. Located in the atmospheric streets of Kannawa Onsen, it has good access to the surrounding hells. It is recommended for a wide range of generations, from adults who love admiring mysterious scenery to families with children curious about unusual fish. Do enjoy its wondrous colors with all five senses.
