ABOUT
About this spot
Located a little away from the Kannawa area of Beppu, Tatsumaki Jigoku is a hell characterized by a "geyser," which is very rare among the Beppu Hells. Also chosen as a Nationally Designated Place of Scenic Beauty, the hot water and steam that burst forcefully from underground at regular intervals let you feel the earth's energy directly. The eruption is powerful enough to reach about 30 meters in height, but it is currently capped by a roof, so you can see the dramatic sight of it hitting the rock with great force. The interval between eruptions is about 30 to 40 minutes. While waiting, we recommend spending time at the adjoining shop and souvenir corner, or strolling through the beautiful azalea garden, which is at its best from mid-April through May. Visiting together with the neighboring "Chinoike Jigoku" (Blood Pond Hell) is the standard sightseeing route. With family or friends, enjoy the mysterious rhythm created by nature and savor the powerful scenery unique to Beppu.
