ABOUT
About this spot
Among the classic Beppu "Hell Tour" sights, Oniyama Jigoku stands out as truly unique. Also known as "Wani Jigoku" (Crocodile Hell), it keeps about 70 crocodiles in pools warmed by natural hot spring heat. The main attraction is feeding time. The crocodiles, usually floating quietly on the water, suddenly burst into motion at the keeper's signal, opening their huge jaws and lunging at the food, an awe-inspiring sight. Weekend feeding times are especially popular, drawing many visitors including families, groups of friends, and solo travelers. The grounds also include a rest area modeled on traditional Malaysian architecture and an exhibit of a giant crocodile specimen, where you can learn about the history and biology of these animals. Crocodile breeding here began in the Taisho era and is known as a pioneering example of putting hot spring energy to good use. Come and experience the otherworldly scene of crocodiles lounging in the drifting steam.
