Oniishi Bozu Jigoku (Oniishi Bozu Hell)

Named for the way gray boiling mud swells into round shapes like a monk's shaved head. One of the Beppu Hells, it also has the adjoining "Oniishi no Yu" bath and a foot bath.

ABOUT

About this spot

Oniishi Bozu Jigoku is one of the most unusual and mesmerizing stops on Beppu's classic "Hell Tour." Gray hot mud bubbles up with a soft burbling sound, and the round swells look like shaven monks' heads, which is how the spot got its name. It is a modern, clean facility that visitors have come to love. On the grounds you will find a steam-heated foot bath, a perfect place to pause between sights. There is also a day-trip bathing facility, Oniishi no Yu, where you can soak to your heart's content in the renowned waters of Kannawa Onsen, in both open-air and indoor baths. It is ideal for a romantic date, a family trip, or a solo getaway to unwind. Enjoy the contrast between the beauty of the surrounding trees and gardens and the hot mud that seems to pulse with the earth's energy, and experience a side of Beppu unlike anywhere else.
