ABOUT
About this spot
Mt. Ishizuchi, the highest mountain in western Japan, is a mystical mountain revered since ancient times as a holy site of Shugendo. From its 1,982-meter summit, a stunning panorama stretches across the Seto Inland Sea, the Chugoku region and even distant Kyushu mountains. There are various hiking styles. The route that uses the ropeway to go up to the middle of the mountain is ideal for beginners and those who want a weekend refresh. For those seeking more thrills, there is also a training course to take on the "chain climbs," scaling nearly vertical rock walls on a single chain, and the sense of achievement after reaching the top is exceptional. The mountain shows a different face on each visit: fresh green in spring, a cool retreat in summer, the whole mountain ablaze with autumn leaves, and a beautiful rime-ice world in winter. Touch the pure air at Ishizuchi Shrine's summit shrine and you will surely be detoxed in body and mind. Why not leave the bustle of the city and go feel the energy of the great nature Shikoku is proud to show the world?
