ABOUT

About this spot

Omishima floats along the Shimanami Kaido in Ehime Prefecture. Oyamazumi Shrine here is one of Shikoku's foremost old shrines, long and deeply revered by successive warlords and the imperial court as a god of mountains, sea and warriors. Once inside the grounds, the first thing that catches your eye is the giant sacred tree said to be about 2,600 years old, the "Camphor Tree Planted by Ochi no Mikoto." Its mystical, overwhelming presence gives off the pure air befitting a power spot. A must-see for history fans is the attached "Treasure Hall." About 80 percent of the armor and weapons (swords and armor) designated National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties nationwide are said to be gathered here, and you can see precious items up close, including those associated with Minamoto no Yoritomo and Yoshitsune, as well as the armor of Tsuruhime, known as the warrior princess. Whether you quietly trace history on a solo trip, or stop by during a scenic drive on the Shimanami Kaido with family or friends, it is a special place where you can feel the energy of nature and the history of Japan.
