ABOUT
About this spot
Built on the site of Matsuyama Castle's Ninomaru (second enclosure), the Ninomaru Historic Garden is an atmospheric historical park that makes use of the ruins of the former lord's residence. The garden is divided into three areas: the "Citrus and Flower Garden" on the north side, which recreates the old floor plan with citrus trees and flowers; the "Flowing Water Garden" on the southwest side, which recreates the floor plan with water, gravel, and lawn; and the "Forest Spring Garden" on the east side, with its pond and waterfall. Together they let you sense the scale of the residence of that time with all five senses. The garden has also been certified as a "Sacred Place for Lovers" because gold coins symbolizing the love between a Russian prisoner-of-war officer and a Japanese nurse during the Russo-Japanese War were discovered here. It is also very popular as a pre-wedding photo location, and its photogenic scenery is a perfect backdrop for traditional Japanese attire. Situated at the entrance to the approach to Matsuyama Castle's main keep, it is a good place to stop at the start or end of your castle visit. Surrounded by the sound of water echoing in the stillness and by trees that change with the seasons, you can spend a peaceful moment immersed in the romance of history.
