ABOUT

About this spot

Right outside Dogo Onsen Station in Hojoen, the Botchan Karakuri Clock is a symbol of Matsuyama created in 1994 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Dogo Onsen Honkan. Every day from 8:00 to 22:00, every hour (every 30 minutes in the tourist season), the clock tower rises to a lively melody and the characters of the novel "Botchan" appear one after another. The elaborate movements recreating scenes from the story are somehow nostalgic and warm the hearts of viewers. Right next to the clock is the "Hojoen Foot Bath," where hot water flows from a kettle actually used in the Meiji era, free for anyone to use. Soaking your feet while feeling the hot spring town atmosphere and waiting for the clock to start moving is a highlight of Dogo sightseeing. At night it is gently illuminated, offering a magical atmosphere different from daytime. From solo travelers to families, it is a classic spot to visit when you come to Dogo.
