ABOUT
About this spot
The Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum in central Matsuyama is a cultural facility where, based on Ryotaro Shiba's masterpiece "Saka no Ue no Kumo" (Clouds Above the Hill), you can experience the Meiji era, the formative period of modern Japan. First to catch the eye is the modern triangular building designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando. Blending into the lush surrounding landscape, its original exposed-concrete design and "floating staircase" lead visitors into an extraordinary space. Inside, the museum introduces the three main characters of the novel, Akiyama Yoshifuru, Saneyuki and Masaoka Shiki, along with the vitality and struggles of Japan at the time and the aspiration they held of reaching the "clouds above the hill." With valuable exhibits and rich digital content, even those who have never read the novel can fully enjoy the historical drama. The nearby Important Cultural Property Bansuiso and Matsuyama Castle make it an ideal route for a historical walk. Whether quietly unraveling history on a solo trip or learning about Japan's dawn with family and friends, it is an intellectual experience spot not to be missed in Matsuyama sightseeing.
