ABOUT
About this spot
Imabari Castle in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, was built from 1602 by Todo Takatora, a master castle builder, and is renowned as one of Japan's three great seaside castles. Its most distinctive feature is the vast triple moat filled with seawater from the Seto Inland Sea. Here you can see the extremely rare sight of sea fish swimming in the moat. The current keep was reconstructed in 1980, and its interior serves as a historical museum with valuable exhibits including imposing armor and ancient documents. From the observation deck on the top floor, you can take in the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge on the Shimanami Kaido and the island-dotted beauty of the Seto Inland Sea, a truly spectacular view. It is perfect for history lovers, solo travelers with a camera in hand, and family outings alike. The illumination, held from sunset until around 10 p.m., is also not to be missed. The white castle walls rising out of the darkness are enchanting, and the castle is popular for evening strolls and as a date spot. It is a splendid castle where you can enjoy Imabari's history, the sea, and a beautiful night view all at once.
