ABOUT

About this spot

Yuzuki Castle is the former stronghold of the Kono clan, who ruled Iyo in the medieval period, located right next to Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture. Today it has been beautifully landscaped as "Dogo Park," and its highlights are the double moat that conveys its appearance of the time and the earthen ramparts, which survive in a remarkably good state that is rare even in Japan. The on-site museum, the restored samurai residence, and the earthen walls can all be visited free of charge. Faithful reconstructions based on excavation surveys let you experience the lives of the samurai of that era in a realistic way. The spacious grounds are also beloved as a place of relaxation for local residents. In spring, about 300 cherry trees, mainly Somei-Yoshino, bloom to make it a famous cherry blossom spot, and in autumn it is a beautiful spot for fall foliage, so you can enjoy the scenery of every season. The observation deck on a small hill offers views of the Matsuyama cityscape and Matsuyama Castle, making it a popular photo spot as well. With its ideal location within walking distance of Dogo Onsen Honkan, it is also a perfect post-bath stroll. It is a recommended sightseeing spot for history fans, as well as for families, friends, and anyone who wants to relax and recharge on their own.
