ABOUT
About this spot
Matsuyama Castle, the symbol of Matsuyama City in Ehime Prefecture, is a famous castle selected among Japan's 100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots and 100 Best Historical Parks. Its greatest feature is being one of the "Twelve Original Keeps," keeps built before the end of the Edo period that still stand. The keep on the summit can be reached by ropeway or lift, offering an aerial stroll and views of Matsuyama city along the way. The castle has as many as 21 Important Cultural Properties, including gates and turrets, and a major attraction is seeing up close the ingenious structure of the "connected keep," excellent in both offense and defense. From the top floor of the keep, a 360-degree panorama spreads out, taking in not only Matsuyama city but, on a clear day, the islands of the Seto Inland Sea and Mt. Ishizuchi, the highest peak in Shikoku. About 200 cherry trees bloom in spring, and the castle is beautifully illuminated at night, offering a face for every season. It is recommended for history lovers as well as those seeking views on a solo trip, a date, or a family stroll. Close to Dogo Onsen, it is an Ehime landmark worth visiting between sightseeing.
