ABOUT
About this spot
Ozu Castle, in Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture, is a historic castle site that once flourished as the political and economic heart of the Ozu Domain. Its greatest draw is the main keep, which was lost in the Meiji era and reconstructed in 2004 as a wooden keep using traditional construction methods. Faithfully recreated from precious sources such as old Meiji-era photographs and wooden-joint models, it lets you feel the warmth of the timber and the sheer skill of its craftsmen the moment you step inside. Inside, you can learn the castle's history through exhibits, and from the top floor of the keep you can enjoy a stunning view of the clear Hiji River and the beautiful castle town streets. The castle has also drawn attention as a rare place in Japan where you can have a "castle stay" and sleep in a castle. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom in full glory, making it a very popular photo spot where you can capture dreamy shots with the castle as a backdrop. It is a great pick for history lovers, as well as for families out for a relaxed stroll or solo travelers looking for a quiet, unhurried time. Why not combine your visit with nearby Garyu Sanso and the old streets for a historic walk through Ozu?
