ABOUT

About this spot

Ishiteji is a Buzan-school Shingon Buddhist temple in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, known as Temple No. 51 of the 88-Temple Shikoku Pilgrimage. The grounds hold many Important Cultural Properties that preserve Kamakura-period architectural styles, including the "Nio-mon" gate, a National Treasure, letting you feel the depth of history firsthand. The temple's greatest feature is the "Mantra Cave" behind the main hall. Many Buddhist statues line the dimly lit cave, creating a mysterious and slightly strange atmosphere. Beyond the cave lies the "Oku-no-in" inner sanctuary, whose unusual architecture is another highlight. Within walking distance of Dogo Onsen, it is easy to reach and ideal for a stop between sightseeing. It is a spot equally suited to quiet solo worship and to a historical stroll with friends or family. Why not spend a relaxing time enjoying the famous "oyaki" at the teahouse on the grounds?
