ABOUT
About this spot
Garyu Sanso, overlooking the scenic Garyu-buchi in Ozu, Ehime Prefecture, is a villa built by the Meiji-era trader Kawauchi Torajiro to spend his later years. Completed over more than a decade, the buildings are known as masterpieces of sukiya-style architecture, carefully designed down to the last detail, and are designated Important Cultural Properties. On the grounds are Garyu-in, filled with a tranquil atmosphere, and Furo-an, built to jut out over the cliff. The ceiling of Furo-an in particular is woven bamboo curved like a ship's hull, and it is devised to bring moonlight reflected off the river surface into the room at night. Its meticulously calculated beauty has even earned one star in the Michelin Green Guide Japon. The scenery is rich in every season: fresh greenery in spring, cool breezes in summer, autumn foliage, and winter stillness, so any time you visit brings a peaceful moment. We hope history and architecture lovers, as well as adults who want to forget the daily bustle and take a breather, will visit this scenic spot at least once.
