ABOUT
About this spot
The Tagajo ruins are the remains of a fortified government post founded in 724 (Jinki 1) by Otono Azumahito, which served as the base of ancient Tohoku. On a vast site about 900 meters square, the government office ruins and wall remains survive, and it is designated a national Special Historic Site. The top highlight is the splendid "South Gate," restored in 2024 to commemorate the 1,300th anniversary of the founding. Its grand form, recreating the architectural techniques of the time, is spectacular. The "Tagajo Stele (Tsubo no Ishibumi)," counted among Japan's three oldest steles and also designated a National Treasure, is worth seeing even if you aren't a history fan. The grounds are developed as a green park where you can stroll leisurely, immersed in the romance of history. People of a wide range of ages can enjoy it, whether a family picnic on the weekend or a solo journey through ancient roads in thought. Visiting together with the adjoining Tohoku History Museum lets you learn about Miyagi's history even more deeply.
