ABOUT

About this spot

Shiogama Shrine in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture, is the Ichinomiya of Mutsu Province with over 1,200 years of history. Long revered by samurai and commoners alike, it now draws many worshippers from across the country as a power spot for prayers for safe childbirth, traffic safety, and victory. The main highlight is the steep 202-step stone staircase on the front approach. When you reach the top, the majestic shrine buildings, designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan, come into view. From the grounds you can also see Matsushima Bay in the distance, and enjoy scenery where seasonal nature and architectural beauty combine. In spring in particular, many cherry trees, including the "Shiogama-zakura" designated a national natural monument, bloom and tint the grounds a gorgeous pink. Because the shrine also enshrines the god of salt, it is said to have purifying power. After worshipping, a recommended course is to enjoy Shiogama's proud fresh sushi in the temple town. It is a famous spot for history lovers, solo trips to refresh mind and body, and weekend family outings.
