ABOUT
About this spot
Zuihoden, an essential stop on any Sendai trip, is the splendid mausoleum (otamaya) where Date Masamune, founder of the Sendai domain, rests. Passing along an approach lined with giant cedars, you come upon beautiful, richly colored architecture that exhausts the finest of the Momoyama style. Although it was once lost to fire in the wartime air raids of 1945, it was rebuilt in 1979, and a major renovation in 2001 faithfully restored its vivid original decoration. Also on the grounds are the second lord Tadamune's "Kansen-den" and the third lord Tsunamune's "Zen'o-den," lending a solemn atmosphere. In the autumn foliage season especially, the vivid buildings and the coloring trees create a subtle contrast of breathtaking beauty. The adjoining museum also displays valuable grave goods found during the excavation and statues reconstructing the appearances of the three lords, letting you feel the romance of history deeply. Why not spend a quiet time in this space where Sendai's history, nature, and art blend splendidly?
