ABOUT

About this spot

Located in Matsushima, one of Japan's Three Great Views, Entsuin is the family temple of Mitsumune, the eldest grandson of the feudal lord Date Masamune. Step inside and you enter a quiet world far from the bustle of the city. A highlight is the Sanreibyo (Sankeiden), a mausoleum designated a National Important Cultural Property. Inside, you will find roses, hearts, and playing-card motifs reflecting the Western culture that Hasekura Tsunenaga brought back from his journey abroad, a true expression of Date refinement. The grounds also hold a beautiful moss garden known as the "Ungai Tenchi Garden," which offers breathtaking scenery in the fresh green of spring and the autumn foliage season. Another popular experience unique to Entsuin is prayer bead (juzu) making. You can choose your favorite natural stones and make a set of prayer beads that is yours alone, making it a wonderful keepsake of your trip. Whether you come with friends, as a couple, or on your own, it is a calming activity to enjoy at an unhurried pace. In autumn evenings, the illuminated foliage reflected on the pond's surface creates a magical view, making this a classic stop on any Matsushima visit. It is well worth a visit not only for history lovers but also for anyone who wants to refresh themselves amid beautiful scenery.
