ABOUT
About this spot
Matsushima, a leading tourist destination in Miyagi Prefecture, is a scenic spot that has been loved since ancient times as one of the Three Views of Japan. The beauty of more than 260 islands floating on the calm sea is said to have amazed even the haiku poet Matsuo Basho. There are many ways to enjoy it. A classic course is to take an "island-hopping sightseeing boat" and view the complex coastline and unique islands up close. On land, cultural strolls are plentiful too, such as crossing the red "Fukuura Bridge," known as a bridge of matchmaking, and touching the depth of history at the National Treasure "Zuiganji Temple," the family temple of the Date clan. The food is also a must. Restaurants serving local oysters, sasa-kamaboko fish cakes and fresh seafood bowls line the streets, and eating while walking is part of the fun. Whether it is a family trip, a girls' trip with friends, a date, or a solo trip quietly viewing the scenery, it is full of charm that satisfies any travel style.
