ABOUT
About this spot
Naruko Gorge is a great canyon up to 100 m deep, carved by the erosion of the Otani River, and is known as one of the top scenic spots in Miyagi. The autumn foliage season is especially spectacular: beech, oak and maple trees turn red and yellow, coloring the deep valley in what can only be called a work of natural art. The highlight is the contrast of the white Oofukasawa Bridge set against fresh greenery or autumn leaves. From the observation deck near the Naruko Gorge Rest House, you can catch the moment when trains on the JR Rikuu East Line emerge from and enter the tunnels running through the gorge, a scene that even non-rail fans will want to photograph. The Oofukasawa Promenade is a walking trail of about 2.2 km, where you can enjoy a forest bath and superb scenery at a relaxed pace, making it a good choice for families, couples and solo travelers alike. The famous Naruko Onsen area is nearby too, and a classic plan is to soak away your fatigue in a hot spring after your walk. Why not get away from daily life and feel the energy of vast nature?
