Located further west of Akiu Onsen, the "inner retreat" of Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, "Akiu Great Falls" is a leading scenic spot sometimes counted as one of Japan's three great waterfalls. With a width of 6 meters and a drop of 55 meters, the sight of it thundering down with a mighty roar is truly spectacular. In addition to viewing the falls from above at the observation deck, you can follow the walking path down to right near the plunge pool and feel the spray and negative ions all over your body. Spring greenery, summer cool breezes, and winter snowy scenery are all lovely, but the autumn foliage season is particularly recommended. The surrounding trees turn vivid red and yellow, and the contrast with the shining white falls paints a breathtaking beauty. The grounds of the adjoining "Akiu Great Falls Fudo-son" have a calm, historic atmosphere, and it is also popular as a power spot where nature and faith blend into a unique energy. It is an ideal destination for a weekend drive away from the bustle of the city, with friends, family, or alone.
