ABOUT
About this spot
Akiu Onsen in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, is a historic hot spring with a history dating back to the Kofun period, said to have been visited by Date Masamune for healing. This hot spring town, spreading along the Natori River, a tributary of the Hirose River, is attractive for its quiet environment that makes you forget the bustle of the city. It is a perfect spot to visit with family or friends on weekends, or to relax and refresh mind and body on a solo trip. The hot spring town has a variety of lodgings, from modern large hotels to long-established ryokan, and many accommodate day-trip bathing. Soaking in an open-air bath listening to the murmur of the Natori River is especially exquisite, and you can enjoy the changing faces of the seasons. The area also offers plenty of sightseeing and strolling points, such as the spectacular "Akiu Great Falls," the "Rairaikyo" gorge with its rows of strange rocks, and the "Akiu Craft Village" where you can experience traditional crafts. Being less than an hour from central Sendai by car or bus, it is easy to enjoy a resort feeling casually, which is a reason for its popularity.
